Bartram Gardens and the Franklin Tree: A Historic Connection

ISA Certified Arborist PD-2068

Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia, Bartram Gardens is a historic botanical treasure that holds deep significance in the world of horticulture.

Founded in the 18th century by John Bartram, a renowned botanist and horticulturist, the gardens are home to a diverse collection of plants, many of which are native to the United States. Among the most notable plants at Bartram Gardens is the Franklin tree (Franklinia alatamaha), a rare and historically important species that was first discovered by Bartram himself.

The Franklin tree is of particular importance because it was believed to be extinct in the wild by the early 19th century, with the only known specimens surviving in cultivation, thanks to Bartram’s efforts. The tree is named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, and its unique beauty— featuring striking white flowers and a fragrant aroma— has captivated plant enthusiasts for generations. Its survival at Bartram Gardens is a testament to the legacy of the Bartram family and their dedication to preserving rare and native plant species.

At John B. Ward, we are honored to play a part in preserving the health and vitality of Bartram Gardens’ plant collection. Our team is dedicated to ensuring the long-term well-being of the garden’s plants through expert plant healthcare services. By applying best practices in pest management, soil care, and overall plant health, we support the ongoing conservation efforts at Bartram Gardens, ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty and historical significance of these plants.

We take great pride in our partnership with Bartram Gardens, contributing to the preservation of not just a beloved garden, but a living piece of American botanical history.
